You want to know my definition of romance? I've been asked time and time again, considering that I don't believe in marriage and monogamy and lifelong commitment, nor do I give much of a rat's ass about romance - do I believe in romance? )No, I believe in God - everybody else has to have signed documents of validity) What is my definition?
Let me enlighten you. It's quite simple really.
There is a CD on the desk of one of my coworkers. It's a simple, home made mixed CD of romantic songs, that her husband of 13 years made for her just a couple of days ago. It says "To the best thing in my life - I love you".
No reason. He just thought she should have it and think of him, remembering how much he loves her, when she's at work.
here's there the collective sigh comes in when all the cynics of the world either switch side or knock their fingertips against their foreheads
To me, that's endearing. Because it's so simple, it doesn't take much time, but proves he thought about the songs she'd enjoy, and to brighten her day up at the office, and to tell her he loves her!
(...I wonder if he has a brother....?)
I've never got a mixed CD. One of my ex's handed over the compressed version of his entire CD collection, which to me spelled out "Here, all the music I have - make your own damn mixed CD". Another told me, very mature, "Aren't we too old for that shit?".
Hey, it's not like I asked them to write me a song!
So there, there it is. My definition of romance. Little, thoughtful things. Cause the devil's in the details...
Now share: ...what is the most romantic thing you've ever done for another person? What's the most romantic thing anyone ever did for you? And what grand (ehum) gesture are you still hoping for...?

One year because I couldn't spend Christmas with an ex he made Christmas for me all over again on Boxing Day. That was quite nice, nor sure if it counts as a romantic gesture right enough.
I don't much go for grand gestures. Generally, the bigger the gesture, the more he's got to be sorry about.
Since I was born a romantic—on Valentine’s Day, no less—there is a deep well of stuff that could answer those questions.
One of my earliest romantic gestures was to write a song about and to my high school sweetheart when we were (I think) 14. Not only did I write the song, but I stood in her yard with my guitar and some roses playing it and singing it to her. I rather think that her father believed that I had lost all of my marbles.
The most romantic gesture I have every received came from a woman who showed up unannounced at my house with dinner, wine, candles, and linen table cloth for no reason other than she wanted to.
Romance in the future? At 62 I have no expectations.
Darn! you lost me at "romantic".
Maybe swallowed my gum before a make-out session? or put it on my wine glass stem instead of under the table? Are those manners or romantic gestures? God I lose at this one! :-)
Oestrebunny the real question would here be: does he have a brother? :)But you're right, little things go a long, looong way!
SSNick wow, Valentine Day child! Much to live up to!
But You shouldn't sell yourself short - age is nothing but a number! I stopped aging at 25... could explain why I constantly get carded at bars! :D
EF - romantic = doing things for someone else's sake that might or might not befenit you. If they do - great, but it's not supposed to be the goal. I know, messed up. Gets me every time too... *sigh*
Not knowing the exact house in which she lived, i did what any smitten guy would do... Find the right neighbourhood and start knocking on doors to ask the occupants "Hi. Does Rose live here?" a dozen houses later I found the right place and decade this October we are still married :)
Gav.
Surprises are the most romantic, in my book.
I believed him when he told me he didn't believe in Valentine's Day, and I tried to be chill about it. It made for a rather delicious surprise, I must admit.
In the first month that we were together, Boy had gone on a class trip to Ooty where there's this famous rose garden and he stole a rose for me from there.. There's a hundred bucks fine if caught.. I'm not big on li'l thefts but that's still the most romantic thing anyone's ever done for me.. Two and a half years gone by and I still have the rose safe in my diary..
We do romantic things for each other all the time.. We write poems for each other and sometimes send each other cards, just like that.. It's pretty sweet!
Ahh, I see. The problem is not lack of romance in your soul, it's a lack of romance in your environment. I think the most romantic thing I've ever done for someone is write "By A Rushing Stream A Soldier Knelt." Because this comment is so far back in the history of your blog I hope I'm not accused of pimping my own work, haha.
